I apologize for the late notice however I will not be able to post this Friday's edition of Shadow Vault. For those of you following me on Twitter, you already know why but let me elaborate.
I was about to take a shower on the last morning of my vacation when I reach in to my bag for a loufa and I withdraw my hand quickly. I instantly feel unimaginable pain. Blood gushes out from my finger tip and I run to the sink. I immediately went to clean the wound, and run water over my finger - I regretted it. I desperately tried multiple times but the pain was unbearable. I was crying and coughing, eventually hacked so hard that I vomited a little. My mother called the front desk and they sent some people with first aid. They wrapped it up best they could and sent me to the hospital to get stitches.
Without going into too much detail, the doctor took a look at it and told me there wasn't enough skin to suture. The nurse gave me a tetanus shot, wrapped my finger up in gauze and warned me it would still bleed through. Out of a pain scale of ten (both knees broken), the pain fluctuated from a six to an eight. I've had my tricep tendon snap once and that was nearly blackout painful - well so was this. I definitely saw spots.
Now I'm waiting for it to heal - maybe 10 days or longer. It hurts too much to type with both hands and I decided to wait until I can have full use of my hand.
I hope you understand my predicament. I will post SV XIII as soon as possible!
(By the way, the object that cut a chunk off my finger was my razor. I threw the blasphemous object away.)
Edit: Shadow Vault will be returning August 2, 2013.
I'm finally back! After a week vacation and a few days in between, I'm finally back to blogging. It's been an adventure! My partner and I took a trip to Kelowna, British Columbia (BC)! We drove the whole way there. It's about 900 km or in case you don't use the (far superior) metric system, it's about 560 miles. It's quite a long way. Google Maps thought it would take about 11 hours but let's just say we made it in record time. The first photo you see on the right is a picture of the major highway between Edmonton and Calgary. It's named the QE2 (Queen Elizabeth II Highway), it used to be just the #2 before the Queen visited. . .
One of the most beautiful features about Calgary is its proximity to the mountains. You can look off into the distance and see them standing majestically. It's quite the sight. Although they may look far away, they're actually very close. It doesn't take very long before you're driving in between them and enjoying their spectacular heights up close.
As soon as we entered the mountains we encountered dense fog and thick rain. This is fairly common since the weather in the mountains is rather fickle and no matter what time of year you're bound to see some rain but this was the most rain I've ever seen. It pretty much rained the entire time. It was fairly dangerous under those conditions since you tend to encounter thick herds of traffic on narrow twisty roads. Yet it was exciting and unexpected, it's been awhile since we've taken a road trip.
Throughout the mountains there are warning signs of falling rocks. A cost effective method of preventing the rocks from hitting the road seems to be these hanging chains. They're fairly common. Every time I've been in the mountains I try to think of what they might be named. There must be a name for them, there's a name for everything. While I was calling them hanging chains my partner came up with the name, "geological lateral restraining harnesses". I laughed so hard! That's what I get for asking a civil engineer.
A memorable aspect of the journey are the tunnels. Located in Rogers Pass between Golden and Revelstoke, there are 6 tunnels. Ever since I was a child traveling through BC I would look forward to going through the tunnels. I'm not sure why but I've always enjoyed them. This still hasn't changed now that I'm older. I guess I always imagined them as portals to an unknown and mysterious land. Thank you, imagination.
As we finally neared the resort the weather transformed into beautiful clear skies with the fading light of dusk. I love taking photos. I find that true beauty can always be found in the wonders of nature.
The road leading to the resort was definitely one of the more frightening roads I've been on. It's all sharp corners and no passing lanes right next to a sheer drop.
At last, our room. Well, this is the part of the room where we spent the most time so it seemed like the most important photo to share. Whether it was watching a movie together or eating our daily breakfast of eggs, bacon and english muffins with salmon cream cheese. Mmm!
For the rest of the week I will be blogging about my stay in BC. Readers I say to you, come for the photos and stay for the story.
Lately, I've had a very difficult time staying motivated. I'm not sure why exactly, perhaps there are simply too many distractions but I've been completely unmotivated regardless of the particular reason. All I think about is writing yet somehow I've been in a slump. I intensely dislike it. I love to write. I love to research. I'm not sure what it is that makes me feel like this but I want it to be over. The sooner the better. Luckily I do have some things to look forward to this month.
For instance, my birthday is coming. To be honest, I'm not exactly looking forward to having my birthday but I am looking forward to being past that day. I haven't had a truly enjoyable birthday in a very long time. It's made me weary these past years and worse than that I usually suffer a bout of depression. Last year was definitely one of the worst I've ever had. All I wanted was a good birthday. I think that's what everyone wants - whatever that entails for them personally. For me it's having people around that care about you. Part of the problem with my birthday is that it falls so near Thanksgiving and sometimes it is Thanksgiving (to clarify, Canadian Thanksgiving happens on the second Monday of October). That means people always have other things to do whether it's with family or friends. Birthdays are so stressful.
Luckily, I will be going on a week trip to British Columbia very shortly. It's a province immediately to the west of Alberta. It's incredibly lush, mountainous and in many ways majestic. I hope I find some peace and quiet there, perhaps relaxing in another place will bring back my motivation.
In case you were wondering, my birthday is October 9th (I share it with John Lennon).
For months now my partner and I have been dreaming of taking a real vacation. We've spent a long time researching resort after resort to try and pick out the best place to travel. Finally we found a place we really like that's truly a dream destination. It has everything we want which means it's all inclusive! What's better than lounging around without a care in the world?
I'm very excited. We've never been on a plane together. We've been dating for almost three years now and we've only traveled on vacation once. It was truly a wonderful vacation too. Have you ever heard of Tofino? What a dreamy, serene place. It's located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia (Canada). It's a great place to go whale watching or just take in the beautiful sights and sounds of the ocean.
Before we go on our supreme vacation we'll actually be heading to Kelowna, BC in October for a week to unwind. It's a wonderful place to relax, it's right next to Okanagan Lake. In fact, Okanagan Lake is said to hold a mysterious creature named the Ogopogo. That's right, Scotland is not the only one with a magical monster.
So where are we going for our supreme vacation? I'm not sure I should give that away just yet. I can say that we haven't officially booked anything yet and we won't be traveling until February at the earliest. I am completely ecstatic. I love the ocean.
