I can't believe it's the fourth Sunday since I've started Storytime Sunday. Time truly does fly by. If this is your first time reading Storytime Sunday, I have some links to assist you so you can catch up: Part I, Part II and Part III. If you don't feel like reading the previous segments that's okay. You'll still enjoy this part.
I know I kind of left things hanging last time so without further ado, here's Part IV.
Arianna chased Ricky, her heart beginning to race with panic. She felt a strong duty to protect her younger brother. She saw him as vulnerable and innocent. When her parents weren't around it was up to her to keep him safe. Arianna came to an abrupt stop and stared. There it was, in front of her, one of the most spectacular things she's ever seen. She craned her neck and tried to take it all in. It was enormous. From further back it seemed so small but it must have been an illusion. It was a doll house. Yet it really wasn't. It was a miniature house. Arianna felt the gears in her head turning, how big was it? She craned her neck again and took a step back. Her brain tried to guess how big it really was. Could her parents fit inside?
Then she heard Ricky's voice. Instantly she snapped out of her daydream and remembered Ricky ran inside. Without another moment's hesitation she ran after him. The door was the perfect size, she noted as she passed through it. "Ricky?" she called out anxiously. He didn't answer back. He didn't always answer back she learned. Sometimes he just did what he wanted without paying any attention to anything else. He could get so lost in a moment.
"Why didn't you wait for me?" Clarissa hissed angrily. Arianna frowned slightly, "I was chasing Ricky" she stated simply. Arianna crept through the little foyer and walked towards a doorway. Clarissa brushed past her and marched straight through the opening. Arianna followed close behind, her face contorted with anger. She hated when her sister rushed ahead. "He's in here," Clarissa shouted, much louder than necessary. Arianna stepped into the little kitchen and saw Ricky sitting at the round table, playing with something. Curiosity swept over her as she stared at the object a little harder. "Ricky, what is that?" she asked.
Ricky held the mysterious little object in his hands, sometimes lifting it to his face to examine it closer or briefly dragging it across the table. He had an intense look on his face as though he were a scientist seeing something for the first time. He was testing it, analyzing it, questioning it. A million hypotheses were forming in his mind, each one a probable possibility. Arianna adored that look on his face. She could tell he was thinking about it. She brought out a chair from the table and sat across from him, never lifting her gaze from the rounded object. What was it?
Clarissa watched them, her cheeks flushed. She hated when Arianna did this to her. Shut her out. She hated it so much. Did she forget about her? Her own sister? How could she forget? Clarissa wanted to be a part of it. This thing Ricky and Arianna did. All she wanted was to be a part of their special little club. It seemed she could never get in. Clarissa set her jaw, feeling bitterness slide down her throat. Not another second went by before Clarissa swiped the object from Ricky's hands.
"Hey!" shouted Arianna, "That was rude! Ricky was holding that!" Arianna's face immediately reflected stony judgement. How could Clarissa be so rude, she thought. She glanced at Ricky's face and saw the beginning of tears. He would wail soon. "Clarissa! Give it back!" she said aggressively. She wasn't going to stand by and let Clarissa do what she wanted. She hated how Clarissa ignored Ricky's feelings. He was their younger brother and he needed a little extra love, couldn't she see that?
Clarissa ignored her sister, unconvinced by Ricky's tears and Arianna's angry pleas. Now they would have to pay attention to her. They couldn't shut her out. She stared at the little roundish object in her hands, rolling it over in her hands again and again. Arianna shouted at her and she did her best to ignore it. Too bad, she thought, I'm playing with it right now. I'm going to figure out what it is. She brought it close to her face and narrowed her eyes, peering at it intensely. What was this thing? She didn't recognize it at all. It had sort of a flattish side and if she held it in her hand just right, it fit perfectly. Almost as though it were designed for her hand.
In one swift move Arianna swiped it from her grasp, leaving Clarissa to look up in disbelief and a mounting anger. "I was holding that!" she screamed. Arianna glared at her, "So was Ricky before you took it from him". In a moment all the sound was sucked from the room as the two sisters stood apart, staring each other down. Tension rose rapidly, like a gun fight from an old western. Their fingers twitched, they locked their gazes and stood ready to spring. Ricky recoiled in fright, covering his ears with his hands. He shut his eyes tight and wished for it to be over.
Both sisters stood still, neither moving closer or further. As though a magnetic force was keeping them apart. Something greater than themselves prevented them from instantly scratching at each other. Arianna clenched her fist tightly around the little object. Then something happened. The house began to shake as though the tension were too much. The walls shook, the floors shifted. The whole house felt like it was being tossed into an earthquake. The girls looked at each other suddenly stricken with panic. The tense atmosphere melted away before them. Arianna rushed to Ricky's side, grabbing him closely and holding him against her chest. She wasn't going to let anything happen to him. She glanced at Clarissa and held her other arm open, offering her warm embrace. Without another angry look Clarissa rushed to her side. Arianna brought her arm around her and held her siblings tightly.
The house shook harder and harder, the sound frightened them as they huddled closely. It was like a loud cracking followed by a low, continuous rumble. Then a strange feeling overtook them in a flash. Like they were being lifted. Arianna held her younger siblings closer. She wasn't going to let go. A new found strength rose rapidly from deep inside of her, she would hold on to them forever if she had to. What started out as a gentle lifting feeling transformed into the feeling of being pushed downwards. A great pressure pushed down on all of them like they were being lifted rapidly. Arianna closed her eyes desperately, please stop, she begged. As if someone heard her silent cries for help the rumbling stopped. The shaking, the pressure, everything stopped. She opened her eyes and looked at her brother and sister. "Are you okay?" she asked them simultaneously.
Clarissa immediately pulled away upon the cessation of the earthquake. "I'm fine," she said quickly. Arianna eyed Ricky, "How about you Ricky?" Ricky looked up at her with his big, hazel eyes and nodded slowly. "Good," she answered quietly. She slowly stood, lifting Ricky to his feet. "What was that?" she asked rhetorically. "An earthquake I guess," Clarissa answered, already convinced of the answer. Arianna stared at the floor, feeling doubt creep up on her. "No...that doesn't make sense. We don't get earthquakes here..." she thought aloud.
"How do you know that?" Clarissa snapped back, annoyed. Arianna continued to stare at the ground, looking all around her for clues, "Because we're not near any tectonic plates..." she motioned with her hands, putting them on top of one another, "merging..." Clarissa stared at her, dumbfounded. Tectonic plates merging? What did she mean? What did that mean? She was just trying to sound smart. She just wanted me to feel dumb, Clarrisa thought bitterly. "You don't know anything!" Clarissa half shouted, tension mounting once more.
Arianna ignored her and looked up, then she saw something her mind couldn't comprehend. She immediately crossed the floor and stared out of the kitchen window. It wasn't possible. It didn't make sense. This couldn't be happening.
