Good day to you all! Before I continue with Storytime Sunday I would like to give a little update. I realize I haven't posted in a couple of days and for that I apologize. I've been quite busy. Luckily I do have some pleasant news. Yesterday (Saturday, December 1) my partner and I bought our second Christmas tree together! I've never had a Christmas tree this early in all my life! It was quite exciting. We purchased it from a lot where most of the proceeds go to charity. It made buying a Christmas tree that much more special. So today (December 2), we will be decorating our tree! We might need to get a few more ornaments or lights but I think it will turn out great. So whenever I get the chance I'll post pictures! Then you can all enjoy my tree. I think I might even post some from last year.
Now onwards! We continue our story. If you are interested in reading the previous segments the links are located here. You can also find them as a subheading for the Blog. Either way you'll be sure to enjoy Part VI.
The mysterious ocean lapped quietly on the shore. Arianna closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She had never breathed such wonderful air before. It felt soothing. When she opened her eyes again she saw something horrifying. She gasped and choked. Her mind searched for the words while her body stood frozen. "Clarissa!" she yelled. In the distance she could see Clarissa atop a sharp precipice with a cluster of jagged rocks beneath her. Arianna couldn't breathe as panic consumed her. "Clarissa!" she yelled once more, desperate to catch her attention.
Clarissa glanced in her direction, sure this time she heard something. Arianna stood on the beach and continued screaming at her. Clarissa screwed up her face and shook her head. Arianna was always overreacting, she thought. No matter what Clarissa did Arianna would be there to judge her. It was tiresome. Couldn't she just leave her alone? Clarissa glanced down the cliff face and out into the ocean. The sights and sounds were exhilarating. She looked off into the sky and and felt the sea breeze gently lick her face. It felt good. Freeing.
Arianna gazed up at Clarissa, her heart beating a mile a minute. She tightly held on to Ricky's hand and tried to imagine making the journey up the rocks. It would be too difficult with Ricky to look after. She wouldn't be able to hold his hand. She wouldn't be able to protect him. Not to mention he was just to small and the rocks were too big. Clarissa had to come down. She just had to. How could she stand up there without a care in the world? Didn't she see the danger she was in? What if she fell? Arianna was instantly overwhelmed with a flood of horrific possibilities. What was she supposed to do, she thought painfully.
As Clarissa stared at the ocean she felt a familiar feeling washing over her. Suddenly she was bored. It wasn't that interesting up here. It looked more fun when she was climbing. Now it was just boring. She frowned. Now she had to go all the way back down. This was pointless. Maybe not entirely pointless, she thought as she gazed down at Arianna. It spooked her sister. She loved scaring her sister. It made her feel kind of powerful. Justified, perhaps. A crooked smile formed on her lips. Well, that was worth something. She could enjoy this feeling for a while.
Arianna breathed a sigh of relief, Clarissa was finally climbing back down. Maybe Clarissa really did listen. Although, it did take her a really long time. Arianna frowned. This was so like her sister, to be reckless and careless while others looked on anxiously. Maybe someday she'll grow out of it, she thought. Maybe someday her sister would finally stop doing such dangerous things.
She smiled thoughtfully. Arianna looked down at Ricky and searched his cherubic face. Ricky was still staring out into the ocean. It really was beautiful, the small waves rolling in and washing smoothly over the sand. The sun was shining down from blue skies and the air was filled with a crisp saltiness. Tears began to swell in Arianna's eyes, the ocean was beautiful, she thought. Truly beautiful. It was unlike anything she had ever seen before. She felt a strong new feeling she had never felt before, the feeling of belonging. The ocean was calming and inviting, whispering sweet nothings to the air and kissing the land softly with each surge of water. I want to stay here, Arianna thought fondly.
Ricky was mesmerized by the water. It would shrink away in one moment and stretch in another. It was magical. Minutes passed like seconds, time was irrelevant. He glanced at Arianna, her hand tightly clasping his. He wanted to be free. He squirmed again and finally escaped her loosened grasp. Instantly he lurched forward and stumbled towards the mysterious water. Before he could reach it Arianna came down on him and snatched him up. Her face looked as though she might scold him. Then a feeling swept over her. Maybe it was okay if Ricky played in the water. She was right here. She could watch him closely. Arianna nodded and silently sat Ricky down on the sand. With tenderness and compassion she removed his shoes and socks then rolled up his pants. In a moment he was standing again, ready to enter the water.
He stood tentatively, unsure. He glanced up at Arianna's face and searched for approval. She gave a little nod. He smiled and turned towards the water, ready. He stepped forward cautiously. The ocean stretched forward and touched his toes. Ricky nearly yelped. The water was chill. He stepped forward again and the water returned his advance with it's own, stretching past his ankles. Ricky stepped back, the cold water was shocking. Arianna looked on at Ricky with a smile. Maybe there was no real danger at all. She stepped into the water eagerly. Instantly she was filled with a rush of happiness. It felt invigorating.
Clarissa ran towards her siblings at full speed, spraying sand behind her with every footfall. "We can go now," she stated simply. Arianna clenched her jaw and pursed her lips. Of course, she thought, always on her sister's time. It was irritating. Clarissa had to be in charge of everything. "I just wanted to stay in the water a bit longer," Arianna replied.
"I want to go now," Clarissa whined. "I'm hungry and I want to go home," she kicked at the sand, "It's boring here".
Arianna felt a prickle of irritation on her neck. She turned her attention to Ricky. He looked like he was ready to go back too. "Ricky, do you want to stay or do you want to go home?" she asked sweetly.
Ricky nodded enthusiastically, "Go home" he said simply.
Arianna sighed. Of course. She stepped out of the water and into the warm sand. Now her feet were covered in sand. Frustrated, she dipped her feet carefully into the ocean before slipping on a sock then a shoe. She turned to help Ricky but he had already put his socks and shoes back on. It made her chuckle, "Oh Ricky" she said.
The three children stood together for a brief moment, examining one another and the ocean one final time before walking back towards the forest. That's when they heard it. Like a low rumble. Arianna stopped and looked around carefully. What was that sound? Clarissa continued onward with Ricky in tow. Arianna stepped forward to follow them.
Another low, groaning rumble. Arianna's eyes lifted to the forest, peering in all directions. "We need to get back to the house..."
The ground shook slightly and caught the attention of the others. A piercing unearthly shriek filled the air around them. Something was after them.
