Hello readers! Today is another addition to Storytime Sunday. I'm looking forward to what might happen next! Feel free to read this post by itself or in conjunction with the others.
I know this is later than usual but with the holidays coming up there are only so many shopping days before Christmas. Luckily, I'm almost finished shopping.
Without further ado, Part VII. . .
Another deathly shriek slices through the air. Ricky covers his ears and closes his eyes tightly, trying to block out the blood curdling scream. Arianna steels her gaze and looks around, examining everything in sight. "We need to go, now," she states, her voice like ice. She would do what was necessary to protect them.
Clarissa hated being told what to do. She knew what to do. She didn't need her sister telling her things she already knew. She hated being treated like a child. Arianna did it on purpose, probably to feel better about herself. She always had to be in control. Frankly, Clarissa was tired of it. She wasn't going to go back just because Arianna said so. In anger and stubbornness, she crossed her arms and glared at her sister. "I don't want to go right now," she replied.
Arianna stares at Clarissa incredulously. She could hardly believe her ears. What was Clarissa talking about? Of course they needed to go right now. They weren't going to wait around and find out where that sound came from. It wasn't a choice. They had to go, end of story. "We have to go," Arianna retorts, her voice edged with anger.
Clarissa shook her blonde head, "No, we don't". Arianna could feel her blood beginning to boil. She looked down at Ricky, seeing his little face scrunched up as his hand squeezed hers tightly. She couldn't let Clarissa do this to them. Arianna was in charge, it was her responsibility to make sure her siblings were safe. She couldn't that with Clarissa behaving like a brat. They didn't have time for this. "We're going," Arianna states, narrowing her eyes on Clarissa.
Clarissa shook her blonde head again, "No," she replied stubbornly, her arms still crossed defiantly. Arianna clenched her jaw and pursed her lips. There wasn't time for this, if Clarissa really wanted to do this, she could do it alone.
In a huff, Arianna gently tugs on Ricky's hand and begins to walk away. Clarissa looks after her and feels her heart fall. What was she doing? Was she leaving her behind? What kind of sister would do that? Clarissa frantically leaped after them and grabbed Ricky's hand, stopping them in their tracks. "Ricky is staying with me," she screeches.
The two sisters glare at one another, unmoving. Ricky tries to squirm out of Clarissa's grasp, desperate to leave. She ignores him and holds tighter, squeezing his little hand hard. "Clarissa!" Arianna screams, "We don't have time for this!"
Clarissa feels a welling up of emotions and desperately tries not to cry. "We always do what you want! You don't even think about us!"
With a deep breath, Arianna tries to calm down. She can hardly believe what she's hearing. What was Clarissa blathering about? They really don't have time for petty fighting. Any second now, that strange monster could find them and make them his lunch. They needed to go. "Clarissa, please, we need to go," Arianna begs, her voice desperate.
I'm going to win, Clarissa thought, satisfied. Arianna isn't going to get what she wants. She's not going to be in control of me. I can do what I want. "No," Clarissa replied rudely.
The two sisters stared at each other, glaring angrily. They both held on to Ricky's hands, ready to let go and lash out. Ready to pounce. Ready to scratch and claw at each other madly. Ricky desperately tries to release himself from their talon like grips.
A sudden, noxious smell fills the air. The ground shakes slightly and catches the girls off guard. The thunderous rumble grows louder and the shriek returns, making all three children freeze as their hearts pound madly. Without fighting, without words, they run. Clarissa and Arianna cooperate and drag Ricky through the forest, desperately running. Ricky's little legs try to keep up but he stumbles and slows them down. Arianna stops and scoops Ricky up, faltering only for a moment to adjust for his weight. Clarissa keeps running, yelling back at them to hurry. The rumbling becomes louder and louder, filling their ears. Ricky holds on to Arianna tightly, screaming out in fright. Arianna holds him tight, running as fast as she can. The forest stretches on and on as Ricky's weight begins to slow down Arianna.
Clarissa runs faster, running well ahead of her siblings. Then she sees the miniature house, nestled between what look like the largest trees on the island. "I found it!" she cries out, turning around and looking back for her brother and sister. "It's over here!"
Her screams are lost as a thunderous crack fills the humid air. Clarissa turns around and sees a tree beginning to fall. "Hurry!" she screams at the top of her lungs.
Arianna reaches within herself, desperately trying to find the strength to move faster. Then she sees it, the little house. With a shot of adrenaline, she pushes harder and finds the strength to run faster. Clarissa turns to see Arianna approaching and flings open the door. "Come on!" she screams.
Arianna piles in to the house and Clarissa slams the door behind them. It does little to buffer the rumbling as Arianna gently puts Ricky down. Arianna desperately tries to catch her breath as Clarissa stares at her for guidance, "How do we leave?" she asks hopelessly. Arianna tries to think, trying to figure out how they got here in the first place. She turns to Ricky, "Where's that thing you were playing with, Ricky?" He stares up at her blankly, not sure what she means. She motions with her hands, a spherical object. Ricky's eyes light up as he runs to the little kitchen. The two girls follow close behind, watching him as he searches the floor.
The whole house shudders violently. The girls grab onto each other and look around. Clarissa whispers, "I'm scared". Arianna feels her heart wrench and palpitate nervously. Then they both hear it, a low growling sound. Then something far worse, a scratching sound. Like claws tearing apart the door. Ricky screams, frightened. He grabs onto Arianna desperately, giving up his search. Arianna falls to the floor, resuming his search. "Where is it?" she whispers to herself. Clarissa falls to the floor instantly, scanning the floor with her.
The scratching gets louder, more violent. Like the door is splintering, about to come apart. The whole house shudders again and the girls crawl around, searching with renewed horror.
