Merry Frankenstein Day! In other words, Happy Birthday Mary Shelley! She was born August 30, 1797 so that would make her 215 years old!
Mary Shelley gave birth to a timeless story about a lonely doctor who managed to bring remnants of a person back to life! Frankenstein's monster has become a recognizable icon, inspiring countless works of art. This includes an almost infinite list of films featuring the monster, such as Frankenstein (1931), The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Young Frankenstein (1974) and other less known films like The Erotic Rites of Frankenstein (1972) or Blackenstein (1972).
The first adaptation of Frankenstein was for the theater in 1823. She attended one of the performances! In 1831 she actually altered her story due to the story's influence. While the myth gathered a lot of attention during her time, it gained even more popularity after her demise. To this day we celebrate Frankenstein as a permanent fixture in horror fiction.
Apparently some would consider today Housewives Day. This means celebrating the hard working, unpaid women of the home. While I agree with celebrating women, particularly the under appreciated, it's unfortunate that such a day would even need to be suggested. Housewives are valuable members of any family, they perform countless chores daily without monetary compensation, making society evaluate their work as worthless.
As a feminist it might seem unusual that I support housewives but to me it makes perfect sense. All women deserve equal rights. Housewives are the most overlooked because people either believe they're uncle tom-ing it or that's their "proper place". I believe that it's oppressive if they felt pressured to be a housewife and subsequently hate it. If a free thinking woman who is well aware of other options decides of her own volition to be a housewife, well that's her choice. Of course I would hope she didn't choose it because it was "easier" (it's not) or feels like she doesn't belong in other occupations. Women have the right to choose wherever they want to work, be it the home or anywhere else. Yet, I'm sure at some point you've heard of the glass ceiling.
The glass ceiling is an invisible barrier preventing women from becoming successful in a male dominated workplace. There's also the glass escalator/elevator. It's an invisible means of success men attain by women assisting them in what people would evaluate as female professions. For example,. fashion or cooking. I agree that society shouldn't be oriented in such a manner but it's a fact. I suppose the real problem lies with society's social construction of gender. Somehow gender and sex have become synonymous. Factually, sex is the physical genitalia one possesses while gender is the perceived notion of "feminine" and "masculine". Women must be "feminine" and men must be "masculine" and anything outside of that is seen as aberrant. How silly! Gender is made up! It's not biologically determined, it's socially determined. How else would you explain why the guidelines for gender are so flexible, ie. girls were not allowed to wear pants historically because it was masculine but now they are because it's fashionable.
I digress. Women can choose to work in whichever career they want and believe me, being a housewife is a career. Happy Housewives Day!
Dream Day is a bizarre holiday created in honour of Martin Luther King Jr. who delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech on August 28, 1963.
Everyone dreams every time they go to sleep regardless of whether they remember or not. Most people are confused about what dreaming means. There are a few theories. I think the majority of dreamers believe that dreams mean absolutely nothing and their content is generated randomly by the brain. While that could be true, it's still just one theory among numerous. Psychoanalytic theory, put forward by Freud, is that dreams are metaphorical. Their content can be analyzed for their true meanings behind the images. Then there's a completely different theory. Phenomenological theory asserts that dreams are personal to the dreamer. There's no book of dream definitions that can accurately analyze any dream because dreams are very specific to the person.
I concur with this theory. Dreaming is extremely personal. The only person that can interpret a dream is the dreamer themselves. Perhaps that seems insurmountable but there is something every dreamer can benefit from knowing. There are different types of content in a dream. Day residue and dream lag. Day residue manifests in the dream as things from every day life. This can be information from one day to one week prior to the dream. Dream lag can be content from years ago, typically memorable emotional events. Emotional events in life are highly salient causing a person to dream about it while they're asleep, demonstrating the subconscious concern. There are also different types of dreams: existential, transcendent and nightmares. Existential dreams are usually about loss, transcendent dreams are surprising and amazing, while nightmares are terrifying.
Dreaming can change depending on what's going on in your life. For those undergoing trauma or loss, dreaming can transform into something different entirely. Those who've underwent some kind of trauma may re-experience the event in their dream while those who've suffered a loss experience separation distress.
Interpreting a dream can be difficult but each person carries with them all the knowledge they need to do so. After you dream try to write down everything you remember. The more you focus on what you do remember, the more you'll be able to recall. Write down everything and try not to be overly concerned with the bizarreness. Part of the reason we have difficulty recalling details is due to the inherent bizarreness of dreaming. When we awaken our conscious mind is confused and doesn't understand the strange images. Put aside confusion and just write it down. Once you've written everything you can remember, read it. Some things will be easy to interpret while others will take a bit more time. Try to think about things that concern you. People tend to dream about what is emotionally significant in their conscious life but it's represented in a strange new way.
I hope that with this information you will be able to interpret your dreams a little easier.
Laughing is easy,
And living might be harder
But loving is both.
I think everyone is born with a hole in their heart. This hole makes you feel an emptiness. The emptiness pangs and aches begging to be filled, making people search for something to satisfy their emptiness. They search and search, hoping that if they find something satisfactory they'll be happy, that they'll no longer feel the pain and longing. So they try to fill it with things that they think will make them happy - money, things, drugs, adrenaline - anything and everything. After they acquire their new "thing" they feel happy for only a moment before the pulsating longing returns with a vengeance. It's not enough. It wasn't satisfactory. So they do it again, filling it with another "thing". Still, it doesn't work.
This hole in everyone's heart cannot be fixed by "things". It can't be fixed by anything someone might find in life. Everyone searches for happiness, expecting to find it outside of themselves. The truth is that happiness is not something you can search for because it is something that already exists inside of each and every person. It lays dormant inside of us, waiting to be discovered. Only you can make you happy. Only you know how to make you happy. We hold the key to happiness in ourselves.
For months now my partner and I have been dreaming of taking a real vacation. We've spent a long time researching resort after resort to try and pick out the best place to travel. Finally we found a place we really like that's truly a dream destination. It has everything we want which means it's all inclusive! What's better than lounging around without a care in the world?
I'm very excited. We've never been on a plane together. We've been dating for almost three years now and we've only traveled on vacation once. It was truly a wonderful vacation too. Have you ever heard of Tofino? What a dreamy, serene place. It's located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia (Canada). It's a great place to go whale watching or just take in the beautiful sights and sounds of the ocean.
Before we go on our supreme vacation we'll actually be heading to Kelowna, BC in October for a week to unwind. It's a wonderful place to relax, it's right next to Okanagan Lake. In fact, Okanagan Lake is said to hold a mysterious creature named the Ogopogo. That's right, Scotland is not the only one with a magical monster.
So where are we going for our supreme vacation? I'm not sure I should give that away just yet. I can say that we haven't officially booked anything yet and we won't be traveling until February at the earliest. I am completely ecstatic. I love the ocean.
Last night was one of the loudest and longest thunderstorms I've seen all summer! May I add that this particular summer I've seen more thunderstorms than usual. All last night it rained and rained, not to mention the intense lightning! The sky lit up over and over like Times Square. I've never seen anything like it! Nature certainly is spectacular.
Nature is wondrous and powerful. Sometimes overwhelming and tragic. It can inspire us, take from us and give back. I would like to be more in touch with nature. I love sitting beneath a large tree or venturing through thick brush. I love staring up at the sky day or night and watching everything move so slowly.
I think it's important for everyone to stop for a moment now and then and take in the surroundings. It's important to appreciate this beautiful earth we take so much for granted. Earth day may be once a year but we live on it everyday.
Quite a while ago I discovered I have a few white hairs. I was in denial at first because it seemed so unlikely. Then I came to accept they were in fact real. I haven't the foggiest why this has happened. People always suggest it's stress related and if in fact that is the case that makes sense. I have indeed experienced enormous amounts of stress in my life. However I've performed a Google search and discovered it could in fact be a vitamin B12 deficiency. So I think the first thing I'm going to do is increase my intake of vitamins. Luckily for me I've started to eat more fruit.
Sometimes when I brush my hair and see those white hairs I find myself filled with questions about mortality. We're aging all the time. We're constantly growing and changing on a molecular level. I have to admit I've taken my youth for granted. It was just so easy to be young and ignorant but now I realize I can't live like that anymore. I need to face the fact I'm not going younger nor am I staying the same age. I'm getting older.
So what does that mean? It means I need to treat myself better. Instead of shrouding myself in ignorant bliss I'm going to do my best to live healthier. I want to feel healthy. I want to feel young. I don't want to feel old. I don't think anyone does. There is no better time than right now. That means eating healthier and getting more exercise. The age old solution. Everyone repeats those words but does anyone really understand what that involves?
Live life like you mean it. We've only got so long before we move on.
