I am considering Korea as a possible destination for teaching ESL. The main reason I've thought about travelling there are the many invitations I've received from Korean women to visit their country. The girls I've known were so eager to share their culture with me. It was their warmth and compassion that instantly made me add Korea to my list of places to go.
I love this little table. It gives you an idea about the economy and what to expect.
According to this chart, the monthly salary could be somewhere between $1,660 and $2030. I didn't mention it last time when I was discussing Japan but private tutoring is clearly a well paying position. Apparently, such a teacher could earn up to $73/hour in Korea but then again, it's rare.
The cost of a Big Mac this time is about $3.05 (compared to $4.16). I still think it's funny that it's used as a comparative measure..
The teacher for the TESL course actually spent most of her time as an ESL teacher in Korea. She loved it. She said, initially she was home sick but then fell in love with the country and stayed for ten years.
600,000 KRW/month ($554)
I used a website called Nicerent to evaluate apartments in South Korea.
The cheapest apartment I found is pictured on the right. It's one room with a washer/dryer, fridge and stove. It has all the bare essentials. I think the thing that surprises me the most is that you have your own washer/dryer. This is common apparently. In Canada, the cheapest apartments don't even have a laundry room in the complex but instead there's a laundromat within walking distance.
If you pay just a bit more, you can expect to get more. At around 900,000 KRW ($830) you can rent a 500 sq ft apartment with a balcony. For 1,200,000 KRW ($1100) there is a 1,100 sq ft apartment in a high rise with three bedrooms and two bathrooms.
For curiosity's sake, I thought I'd take a look at the most expensive place to rent.
Turns out, it's a giant monstrosity of a home with seven bedrooms and six bathrooms, listed at 10,656 sq ft! The rent is 30,000,000 KRW/month ($28,000) and includes every luxury you'd want in a large home. I can only imagine the parties!
The listing below this one was located in a high rise apartment. The rent is 25,600,000 KRW ($23,622) for just 1,172 sq ft, including three bedrooms and two bathrooms. It has a really lovely wood floor but you're definitely paying for the view and location.
Korea is just a little bit cheaper compared to Japan but Japan is one of the most expensive places in the world.
I think Korea is truly a wonderful nation. I love their idealism and appreciation for harmony. What really interests me is the stat below. According to the CIA World Factbook, 43.3% of Koreans aren't part of any religion. I think that's rather unique.
Oh, there are a few other appealing aspects of Korea. Such as the SC2 scene and of course, the world renown, Psy.
